How long does NMSDC certification take?

NMSDC's FAQ states its goal: complete certification reviews within 45 business days of the application being submitted. That is about nine calendar weeks. The goal runs from submission, so the time you spend gathering documents comes first and is not counted.

Before you submit. NMSDC's document list for a standard application includes: the online application, e-signed by the primary owner; proof of citizenship and eligible minority ethnicity for at least 51% of the ownership; a resume for each qualifying minority owner making up that 51%; proof of the business's federal tax ID (EIN); business formation documents; proof of the initial capital investment; relevant business licenses; the last two years of tax filings; and current invoices with proof of payment. Franchises add the franchise agreement, and partnerships organized as an LLP or Ltd. submit the legal documents for every company involved. Any agreements that restrict the minority owners' ownership or control are part of the file too.

Who reviews it. You start through the NMSDC regional affiliate that serves your area, which also publishes the fee. NMSDC says applications are evaluated by trained certification specialists using uniform national standards. After you pay and submit, a specialist reviews the application, contacts you for anything missing, schedules either a site visit or a virtual interview, contacts the references you listed and does any other research needed. You are then told the result, and certified businesses are added to the database corporations and governments use to find suppliers.

What slows it down. The review cannot finish while the specialist is waiting on you. Incomplete documents, a slow reply to a request for more information, an interview that is hard to schedule or references who do not answer all add time.

How to keep it short. Submit the full document list the first time, with every signature. Check that ownership percentages match across the formation documents, tax filings and application. Answer specialist requests the same week. Tell your references to expect a call. Keep the owner available for the site visit or virtual interview, since the review tests control and day-to-day operation, not only ownership.

Renewal. NMSDC certifications are valid for one year. NMSDC asks for a brief renewal application within 90 days of the expiration date so the certification continues without a gap, and recertification is done each year through the NMSDC Hub.

For comparison, WBENC says WBE processing generally takes 90 days from the date its Regional Partner Organization deems the application complete.
