Supplier Diversity in the United Kingdom

Supplier diversity in the UK is corporate-led. There is no UK equivalent of the US federal set-aside system; instead, large corporate buyers run inclusive procurement programmes and recognize certification from MSDUK for ethnic minority-owned businesses and WEConnect International for women-owned businesses.

Quick answer

Supplier diversity in the United Kingdom runs on its own certifications, not US ones. MSDUK certifies ethnic minority-owned businesses; WEConnect International certifies women-owned businesses. Certification requires at least 51% ownership by the diverse group, and corporate supplier diversity programs operating in the United Kingdom recognize these certificates.

Certifying bodies in the United Kingdom

Each body certifies a different ownership category and runs its own application, documentation review, and site assessment. Start with the one that matches your ownership.

MSDUK

ethnic minority-owned businesses

Minority Supplier Development UK, founded in 2006, certifies ethnic minority-owned businesses and connects them to its corporate members through networking, matchmaking, and its annual conference.

How certification works

The shape is the same across certifying bodies: prove at least 51% ownership by the diverse group with corporate documents, financials, and owner identification; complete the review, which for most bodies also tests management and control and may include a site assessment. MSDUK lists supplier membership at 300 pounds plus VAT per year; WEConnect fees vary by company size. Check each organization's current schedule before applying.

Government procurement

UK public procurement has no direct equivalent of the US federal set-aside system for diverse-owned firms. Supplier diversity demand comes from corporate buyers, many of them US-headquartered multinationals whose programmes extend to their UK operations.

Selling into US and global corporate supply chains

MSDUK certification is recognized by its corporate member network, which includes global companies buying in the UK. Women-owned UK firms can use WEConnect International certification to reach member buyers running supplier diversity programs across markets.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a UK equivalent of MBE certification?

The closest is MSDUK's Ethnic Minority Business certification. Like NMSDC's MBE in the US, it verifies majority ethnic-minority ownership and connects certified firms to corporate buyers. The two organizations are separate; certification with one does not transfer automatically to the other.

What does MSDUK membership cost?

MSDUK lists supplier membership at 300 pounds plus VAT per year, with a discounted three-year option. Check the current rates on msduk.org.uk before applying.

Does the UK government require supplier diversity?

No. There is no UK statutory equivalent of US federal set-asides for diverse-owned firms. UK supplier diversity is voluntary and corporate-driven.

Doing business in the United States?

US certifications (8(a), MBE, WBE, and the rest) have their own eligibility rules and issuing bodies. Our US guide compares every one.
