NMSDC certifies Minority Business Enterprises through 23 regional affiliate councils, and the certification process, verified at nmsdc.org on August 7, 2026, sets a goal of completing review within 45 business days of a complete application. The ownership and control test requires at least 51 percent ownership by one or more US citizens who are Asian-Indian, Asian-Pacific, Black, Hispanic, or Native American. Certification runs one year, with a renewal window that opens 90 days before expiration. Fees are tiered by revenue and set by the regional affiliate, from as low as $270 for firms under $1 million in annual revenue to as high as $1,700 for firms over $50 million.

Lenders build financing programs around MBE certification because it is a faster ownership and control check than building diligence from scratch: the credential is a public NMSDC record an underwriter can verify directly. SupplierDiversity.com's lender directory currently lists 46 financing programs, out of 53 total, that name MBE certification as a qualifying credential, more than any other certification we track.

The SBA 7(a) program is the federal financing route most of those lenders point certified MBEs toward. Verified at sba.gov on August 7, 2026: the maximum loan amount is $5 million, SBA guarantees up to 85 percent of loans of $150,000 or less and up to 75 percent of loans above that amount, and maturities run up to 10 years for working capital and up to 25 years for real estate or equipment with a longer useful life.
